How many streamers play a game demo on Twitch?
Published · Numbers as of
74%of 1,397 games that streamers played as a demo or playtest on Twitch in one week of autumn 2026 had a single channel
Usually one, among the demos that get streamed at all. In the week of 28 Sept 2026 to 4 Oct 2026, 1,397 games on Twitch had at least one stream titled as a demo, a Next Fest build or a playtest under the game's own category. 1,031 of them (74%) were streamed by a single channel, and 179 (13%) by three or more.
That was an ordinary week, three weeks before the October 2026 Next Fest. We will count the fest week the same way and add it here.
How many channels streamed each demo
| Channels | Games | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1,031 | 74% |
| 2 | 187 | 13% |
| 3 to 4 | 89 | 6% |
| 5 to 9 | 54 | 4% |
| 10 to 30 | 25 | 2% |
| 31 or more | 11 | 1% |
| All | 1,397 | 100% |
The five days before, 23 Sept 2026 to 27 Sept 2026, looked the same: 74% of 910 games had one channel and 13% had three or more. The few games with dozens of channels were a mix of demos of large releases from big publishers and indie demos that caught on.
Streams we can't count: Games + Demos
A streamer can only pick your game if it has a Twitch category. Otherwise the stream goes under Games + Demos, a category that doesn't say which game it was. In the same week, 39,366 channels streamed under Games + Demos, and 658 of them had demo, Next Fest or playtest in a title. None of those are in the table above. If your game has no category yet, that is where its streams go (how to add your game to Twitch).
Languages
65% of the streamers were English-language channels. We counted a channel once for each game it streamed, 3,572 in all, so a channel that streamed two demos counts twice. The next largest languages were:
- German: 296 (8%)
- Spanish: 259 (7%)
- Portuguese: 156 (4%)
- French: 154 (4%)
This is the language each streamer set on their channel. Measured from the speech in the streams we analysed, the share of non-English streams was similar (indie game streams that aren't in English).
What it means for your demo
- If one or two people stream your demo, each stream is most of what you will see. Find it and watch it before the VOD expires (how to find Twitch streams of your game, how to save them).
- With one stream you see one player's session. With three or more, a problem that comes up in two of them is worth a closer look, though it can still be chance (using Next Fest streams as a playtest).
- We don't know yet how much a fest week changes these numbers. We will count the October 2026 fest the same way and add it here; until then, collect the streams of your demo while the fest runs.
How we counted
Every 20 minutes, our sweeps list the live streams on Twitch through the official Twitch API. We counted a stream when its title contains “demo” (as a word), “Next Fest” or “playtest”, and it was filed under a game's own category. A channel counts once per game, however many times it streamed it that week. We keep only the counts, not channel names. Counted on 5 Oct 2026 for the weeks of 23 Sept 2026 to 4 Oct 2026.
What this doesn't tell you
- Many streamers title a stream with the game's name only. Those streams of a demo aren't counted, so the real number of streams per demo is higher than this.
- Demos that nobody streamed aren't in the table, because we only see games that appear on Twitch. Of all demos, the share with one streamer or none is higher.
- A stream shorter than 20 minutes can fall between two sweeps and be missed.
- On 4 October our sweeps stopped for about 7 hours, so the second week is slightly undercounted.
- It is one ordinary week in autumn 2026, not a fest. It says nothing about YouTube, TikTok or Kick.
Demo in the October Next Fest?
Overheard finds the Twitch streams of your Steam game or demo and tells you where streamers got stuck, what broke and what they liked, each with a link to the minute in the VOD. Send us the Steam page: we email you when enough streamers have played it, and you decide then whether the $49 report is worth it.
